OKCorrugated cardboard has an undeservedly bad reputation. You probably know it best as packaging material that gets discarded right away. Even as moving boxes, it often leaves a bad impression because the handles tear or the bottom falls out.
So why do we use corrugated cardboard for furniture construction?
Simple: Not all corrugated cardboard is the same!
Corrugated cardboard consists of several layers of paper bonded together with starch-based adhesive to create its characteristic structure. The combination of flat and fluted paper layers creates a lightweight yet sturdy material. The properties of corrugated cardboard depend, among other things, on the quality and grammage of the paper used, as well as its construction. Shipping and moving boxes, for example, often use lighter grades of corrugated cardboard.
For our cardboard furniture, we use high-quality heavy-duty corrugated cardboard. Strong kraft papers with a grammage of up to 300 g/m² are combined in multiple layers. For comparison, standard copy paper typically weighs around 80 g/m². The kraft papers used and the multi-layered structure give the corrugated cardboard the strength and resilience required for use in furniture.
The load-bearing capacity of corrugated cardboard furniture is demonstrated by our products: our cardboard beds can support many times their own weight. Our versatile stool, which can also be used as a bedside table, is designed to support loads of up to 100 kg while weighing just around 800 g itself.
The material alone, however, is only part of the story. It is the combination ofcarefully selected papers, the structure of the corrugated cardboard and thoughtful design that gives our cardboard furniture its stability.
Did you know? The German word “Pappe” (cardboard) is thought to originate from the verb “pappen”, which was once used to describe the process of gluing or joining layers of paper together.
There’s more to corrugated cardboard than its stability. The corrugated cardboard used for our furniture contains between 54% and 80% recycled fibres. The remaining share consists of virgin paper fibres, which contribute to the properties required for furniture construction. Offcuts generated during production can be collected and returned to the paper recycling stream.
Corrugated cardboard is a hygroscopic material, meaning it can absorb moisture from the surrounding air and release it again as conditions change. Its layered structure also has sound-absorbing properties.
Another quality we value is its versatility. Corrugated cardboard can be cut, folded, printed and shaped in many different ways, giving us plenty of freedom when developing new furniture designs. Our coloured cardboard furniture is printed using solvent-free, water-based inks.
And then there’s one of its most noticeable advantages in everyday life: its low weight. Corrugated cardboard allows us to create sturdy furniture that remains surprisingly lightweight. This makes our furniture easy to move around, rearrange and take with you when you move home.
At the end of its useful life, the corrugated cardboard used for our furniture can be disposed of with waste paper and returned to the paper recycling stream.
